Hyperopia
29.03. - 17.05.2024

Hyperopia is a psychedelic two channel video installation that uses script, disorientating editing techniques, and immersive sound. A series of vignettes come together to create a contemporary fable encompassing claustrophobic relationships, the transmission of ego, delusion, escapism, healing and the search for connection.

Hyperopia at City Galerie Wien also features a new installation which includes aditional AV works, a collaged room divider, found objects and the paintings which feature in the film.

Ruth Angel Edwards (b1986 London) and Chloée Maugile (b1996 Santa Monica) are artists and friends who have been collaborating since 2021, making experimental films that use dark psychological script and humour alongside psychedelic filming techniques and sound. Their holistic and hands-on approach to making means that their process involves many different creative elements, with the artists taking on various roles at the different stages of production to form a responsive and generative way of story telling, image making and world building.

This installation includes elements of prints made for the film set by Waj Hussain and polaroid photos taken during the shoot by Joseph Campbell.

The Thinkers

We all know the sculptures of those tall geniuses, looking down on us from the architecture of cultural institutions and historic buildings. Audéoud modeled her own. out of self drying clay, oil paint and resin. they know all, they know nothing but most importantly they are constantly involved in big discussions with each other creating a concert of voices of know-it-alls and backseat drivers.

At least they don't seem to be authoritarians standing on shelves not on prestigious architecture, no idealism is involved in their conversations. they are just some brainiacs talking in circles, claiming whilst being unsure.

they are also inquisitive and dubious but just in the realm of how far they can go in their charlatanism. but hey, at least they are cute, not big, their feet standing on emptied and upside -down ice cream container plinths instead of museums, just mock-ups of the real danger - the modernist bronze.

The sculptures are on the same level as the Audóuds book installation. the several series of catalogues were discarded from Secession in Vienna and their covers were replaced. the titles are epistemological aphorisms. titles of books that one would like to read. since nobody will ever write these books or better - they are impossible to write - one is stuck with the conversation about possibility. no beginning - no end - no explanation. no author - no editor - no cynicism.

Looming over the noise Audéoud „brown painting“ donkeys appear, dark, kind and soft - eyed.
They frame the „Thinkers“ and „Book“ series and one ultimately finds oneself also looked at by them and the uncanny feeling, that one is followed around by these imminent gods, prevails. They are not denouncing you since they are not political. you are not judged but what would you have to worry about? to be more clownish than the little Thinkers and their male mastery? not you! you are looking, you are not talking. you are not stubborn or stupid. you are becoming animal, becoming background, becoming cloud. you have nothing to worry about.

„The Thinkers“ is Fabienne Audéouds first solo exhibition in Vienna.

  We want to thank

Secession for their generosity (thank you Albert) and the DRAC IDF 2017 grant that facilitated the production of the sculptures

Something that  aligns with my…. interests

A collection of paintings based on and around Austrian Duke Maximilian I, the last emperor of Mexico. The portraits are paired with leopard print and stripes. Hollywood actor Bette Davis embraces her lover.

Inspired by my recent trip to Mexico city,

Desks with vases and lights,

The paint, the canvas and the paintings fill the gallery.

An emperor who was tricked into ruling a country from a fake plebiscite is executed and then painted by Manet

Proposal to open a thrift store.

Withdraw about $30,000, with the rest I’ll put it towards the window. A small curated store is what everyone does. So without it being fast fashion, what if we encourage large donations, piles of stuff, still sustainable, but heaping! Maybe we could even try and install a conveyor belt:)

It's so cute, filled with objects discarded and donated. Our op shop opens. Ideally it’s a shop with beautiful glass windows and it’s location on a corner. It's a treasure hunt of things. I am looking forward to doing the displays. A treasure hunt store. Fabric here and there. Half used makeup products hint that weekly visitors use the store as a vanity. There’s a vignette of warmth from the oil heaters

I love finding vintage christmas stuff.

Last christmas I found

It’s definitely more about having a lot of stuff.

Not in an unethical way and definitely low carbon emissions hopefully.

Not like antiquing though. Like when you sort through different people to find your forever person. Like what if it was like that, like life, but we made life in the window, we will have probably about $0,000 for the window.

Something I worry about a lot?  Definitely money, my health and fertility.

The donation bins will be…. Something neutral…. Beige or maybe light grey

I hopefully get some cool stuff from the early 2000’s like a linen pink polo shirt and a livestrong bracelet. Or something really rare like a deck of cards from the 1910’s or something.

Where does the stuff come from?

Estates, people who died, divorced, moved, harvest season.
